Description

This fuselage section is from W4964, a very historic Lancaster. Flying with 9 squadron, she was coded ‘WS-J’ and named “Johnnie Walker – Still Going Strong”. On 15th September 1944 she took part in the raid against the German battleship “Tirpitz”, anchored in the Alten Fjord, Norway. The’Tallboy’ bomb dropped by ‘WS-J’ was later shown to have hit the Tirpitz 50ft astern of the bow, gone right through the ship and then exploded underneath, tearing a hole which allowed water to flood in. This had been W4964’s 100th operation, one of only 36 Lancasters to reach that number. Despite her ‘celebrity’ status she was later broken up, with only this small section surviving and used as a garden shed. The BBMF Lancaster ‘PA474’ flew as ‘WS-J’ from 1994 to 1999. Displayed above is the wingtip from Lancaster ‘R5726’ which broke up during a training flight on the night of 4th/5th April 1944. A veteran of 44, 50 and 100 squadrons, she was part of No.5 Lancaster Finishing School based at RAF Syerston when the accident occurred.
