editDescriptionPaxton Presbyterian Church.jpg |
English: Paxton Church today meets in the oldest Presbyterian church building in continuous use in Pennsylvania, and the second oldest in the United States. The present stone sanctuary was erected in 1740, replacing a log meeting house which served as a place of worship during colonial days.
Its early history is closely interwoven with the colonial history of central Pennsylvania. In 1732, the congregation was officially organized by the Presbytery of Donegal. The Rev. John Elder, the famous "Fighting Parson," became pastor in 1738. Born and educated in Scotland, he continued as pastor until his death in 1792. Elder led his congregation through the French and Indian War, leaning his Pennsylvania Rifle against the pulpit as he preached. He was a passionate supporter of the Revolutionary cause, and served as a commissioned officer during the War. In the ancient churchyard lie the remains of the founding members of the Church and their families, including the remains of more than sixty soldiers of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. William McClay, the first U. S. Senator from Pennsylvania, is also buried there. |
