Федор Славянский — один из последних учеников А. Г. Венецианова, основоположника русского реализма. Следуя указаниям учителя, воспитанники венециановской школы работали с натуры. Их модели, как правило, — крестьяне, горожане мещанского или купеческого со- словия. В портрете девочки художник правдиво отражает ее внешний облик. Детали так же остро интересуют художника, как и ее лицо: тщательно и любовно выписаны серьги, узел платка, складки одежды. Картина представляет своеобразный «малый жанр», подобные про- изведения «кабинетного» формата с изображением «характерных голов» пользовались большой популярностью среди российских лю-

бителей живописи.
