Description
English: Peden's Stane. The stone on which this cast iron monument stands marks the traditional position of a Covenanters' meeting places, at which Alexander Peden preached. The National Covenant of 1638, written in Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh on 28 February 1638, called for all Scots to oppose Roman Catholicism and the policies of Charles I. One of the famous Covenanters was Alexander Peden from Ayrshire. Peden upheld the National Covenant, believing that God, not the king, was the head of the Church. In order to continue his rebellion, Peden wore a mask as a disguise when preaching at illegal outdoor services such as those that were held here. See also 881172
