English: Assorted shapes of Pele's tears collected a few kilometers downwind from Mauna Ulu from along the Hilina Pali Road on Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i. U.S. dime for scale in lower right. When pieces of magma shoot up into the air during a volcano eruption, they solidy on falling. Some form these shapes, which are called Pele's hair or tear because Pele is the goddess of fire in Hawaiian mythology. A Pele tear is usually connected to a strand of hair.
