Summary
editDescriptionPenlee at Stonehenge Works (geograph 5781755).jpg |
English: 'Penlee' at Stonehenge Works. Plinthed behind the station of the Leighton Buzzard Railway, this was supplied to the Penlee Quarries, Newlyn, Cornwall, in 1902 and worked there until 1946, when it was plinthed there for some years, painted yellow. It is a product of the short-lived firm of Stahlbahnwerke Freudenstein of Berlin, works number 73 of 1900 or 1901. It was supplied via the agent Koppel, and it is likely his name and also Berlin were on the works plate. Accounts differ for what it was named (or possibly called) at first, 'Berlin', 'Koppel' and 'Penlee' are the contenders. A contemporary report for the 1902 opening of the railway in the 'Cornish Telegraph' states it was christened 'Penlee' then. All agree it was called this from 1914 onwards. It is my theory that the works plates were removed in a patriotic gesture in 1914, and some have confused this with the removal of name plates. |
