Description
English: Penny Hedge The Penny Hedge is planted in Whitby harbour, opposite the Middle Earth tavern, every year on Ascension Eve. The custom is said to date back to 1159 when a hermit or monk was attacked and killed by hunters for protecting a boar they were chasing. The hunters were charged by the Abbot with building the 'penance' hedge every year and making sure it was strong enough to withstand three tides. If the hedge failed they would forfeit their lands. The tradition is still carried on today by the present landowners, even though they were released from the penance in 1981. Once finished an 800 year old horn is sounded three times and the words "Out on ye" are shouted three times. The hedge is left to await the tides.
