Description Persistent interstitial pulmonary emphysema (PIPE) occurs mainly in preterm infants subjected to artificial ventilation for the respiratory distress syndrome. It caused by alveolar rupture resulting in dissection of air along bronchovascular bundles and interlobular septae; dissection of air may extend into the mediastinum and/or pericardium and may disrupt the visceral pleura resulting in pneumothorax. When present for more than a week the adjective "persistent" replaces "acute" In this low magnification image air cysts are seen in the hilar region and even involve a lymph node.
