Description
Deutsch: Mit den aus den Stereo-Bildkanälen des Kamerasystems HRSC auf der ESA-Raumsonde Mars Express erzeugten digitalen Geländemodellen lassen sich perspektivische Ansichten der Marslandschaft erzeugen. Das große Grabensystem Tantalus Fossae liegt östlich des vier Kilometer hohen Vulkans Alba Patera und lässt die gewaltigen Kräfte erahnen, die durch lokale und regionale Spannungsfelder von unten auf die Marskruste einwirkten und zu vulkanischer und tektonischer Aktivität führten. Der Krater rechts im Bild hat einen Durchmesser von 18 Kilometern und wird von einigen Grabenbrüchen durchtrennt. Das deutet darauf hin, dass der Krater noch vor dem Ende der grabenbildenden tektonischen Aktivität entstanden ist.
