Summary edit
DescriptionPeru-191 (2218693180).jpg |
English: Intiwatana is also called the sun stone, this curiously shaped stone block is believed to have been a solar clock or “the hitching post of the sun”, where the sun rays cast shadows used for the planning of seasonal activities and religious ceremonies. This was the center of the priestly activities and involved rituals at the winter solstice that brought back the sun. In tropical latitudes the progression of the solstices and equinoxes is not nearly as obvious as in temperate locations, but the timing of the rains and thus, the correct time for the planting of the crops, made these calculations of great practical importance. |
