Description
English: This image, acquired on 27 May 2022 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, shows a phytoplankton bloom in the Bristol Channel. Phytoplankton is responsible for most of the transfer of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the ocean, as well as for producing part of the oxygen we breathe. Phytoplankton blooms are quite common in the northern hemisphere in spring and summer, as the increased sunlight and warmer temperatures cause the proliferation of nutrients needed to sustain them. By measuring ocean colour, Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites allow for the monitoring and detailed study of the properties and dynamics of the biogeochemical constituents of the marine environment.
