Summary edit

Description Piazza Navona is built over the interior of the Stadium of Domitian, a Roman stadium built in 80 AD. It was Rome's first permanent venue for athletics. After the decline of the Roman Empire, the stadium fell into disrepair and was scavanged for building materials. The surviving pieces of the lower arcade were incorporated into the surrounding buildings as Piazza Navona developed into a public space by the late 15th century.
