Summary
editDescriptionPillbox at Huntsham bridge - geograph.org.uk - 723970.jpg |
English: Pillbox at Huntsham bridge Totally hidden to visitors by dense undergrowth for most of the year this WW2 pillbox emerges each winter. To the military historian it is a type 22 pillbox being of brick construction and hexagonal in format. It formed part of the "Stopline 27" fortifications running the length of the Wye from Chepstow to Hereford. It was built in great urgency in 1940 when defence staff feared a possible German invasion via Ireland. The concept of long "stoplines" was outmoded by modern warfare long before the concrete was dry although excellent for local morale! Sadly, with the passage of time most of the pillboxes in Stopline 27 have disappeared. Coppet hill is in the background. |
