| Description |
English: Ponderosa pine populations on the eastern side of the Continental Divide at the base of Rogers Pass have many basal limbs characteristic of Pinus scopulorum (or Ponderosa pine east of the Continental Divide) yet have consistently more than two needles per fascicle with the needles being much longer than the female cones, which are traits characteristic of Pinus ponderosa (or Ponderosa pine west of the Continental Divide). Genetic evidence reveals that these east slope Ponderosa pine from the Rogers Pass area have introgressed alleles from west slope Ponderosa pine (Latta & Mitton. 1999. Evolution doi.org/10.1111/j.1558-5646.1999.tb05371.x). |
