c/n 12-1618 Built 1946 This aircraft carried out a ‘Round the World’ flight in 1947. One of a pair, it was named “City of Washington” and was flown by Clifford Evans. The second aircraft was flown by George Truman, who named it ‘City of the Angels’. ‘City of the Angels’ is now preserved at the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Both aircraft were fitted with metal propellers, additional radio and navigation equipment and had the second seat removed and replaced with two fifty-gallon fuel tanks. This gave the aircraft a range of 2,600 miles and 27 hours. The flight began at Teterboro, New Jersey, on 9th August 1947 and returned on 10th December, having covered 22,436 miles with 55 stops. The flags of each country visited were painted on the rear fuselage. This was the first time that private, light aircraft had circled the globe. William T. Piper Sr. purchased the aircraft in 1949 and donated it to the Smithsonian Institute. Restored in 1974, it is seen on display at the Steven F.
