We entered Pipli long after sun down and I was very tired and just wanted to get back to the Hotel. However, what a colorful treat awaited me. At night the colours of the craft work is especially vibrant! But was truly amazed that men in sweaty ‘wife-beaters’ could produce something of such fineness. “The village of Pipili is well-known for its appliqué work. The Pipli Appliqué work owes its origin to Lord Jagannath during 12th century. The income of this town is essentially dependent on the business of its handicrafts of which the appliqué works are the main source. Nowadays, Pipli is globally known for its appliqué and many workers and workshops continue to practice the technique, creating both traditional and contemporary items.” (Wikipedia) |
