(After Perrot and Chipiez.) in all 24,740 spans, or 6790 metres (22,277 feet). In la\-ing outsuch places, men, probably from superstitious motives, shunned thesquare. According to Bottas measurements, the nortlnvest andsoutheast sides of the quadrangle measure 5397 and 5741| feet Vol.. IT.—0 82 I^lIE SARGONIBAE. respectively, which again gives the circumference as 22,277 feet, theAssyrian span equalHng 0.27425 of a metre, or lOi inches. Thecity wall is 79 feet thick, and is built of bricks on a foundation oflimestone. The hmestone wall is unniortared and double, the inter-mediate space being filled in with rubble. Three of the walls havetwo gates each, at irregular distances ; the wall of the northwestside, on which the palace lies, has but one.
