Description

Henry Cochrane's notes read:

"Plano de la Linea del Ferro Carril. Mejia of Arequipa, 1809. Profile shows the constant ascent. Plain shows curves, etc. =at one point so circuitous that I surmise heading diff. way but all really going in one direction. Mejia the Embarcadero—Arequipa cap. and dept. can be seen. Road built by Henry Meiggs in 1868-9 and opened in Jan. 1870, invited guests, one week, decorated locomotives and cars = all hotels rented = city subsidized = horses and carriages, free board, lodging, wines, etc., etc. Note: the Pampas of Islay for next view."
