English: « Quebec's first inn-keeper, 1648

On September 19th 1648, the Council of New France granted Jacques Boisdon permission to operate Quebec's first inn to bring comfort and fellowship to the courageous settlers. This privilege was granted on the condition that the establishment be closed on Sundays and holidays, and during religious celebrations.

Legend has it that the beadle, whose duties included preserving order at church services, would diligently search each room and poke under the beds with his staff to ensure that no one remained on the premises during mass.

These walls bear witness to festive evenings, ringing laughter and stories told in confidence by settlers, fur traders and soldiers. Here, for a brief moment, hostile lands, misery and epidemics were forgotten. There was but one rule : enjoy fellowship, feast and warm yourself to forget the rigours of winter and the daily struggle for survival. »
