Description
English: Plate 2, View from General Outram's Head Quarters (Dr. Fayrer's House)

Chief Commissioner Lawrence was aware of the precarious atmosphere in Lucknow, and when the 1857 revolt swept Avadh he immediately took up defensive quarters in the Residency compound. The Baillie Guard Gateway in the centre of the picture was one of the most important posts in the garrison. The ruined gateway to the left was held tenaciously by the Indians. Dodgson wrote that they "had several crack shots concealed in the upper portion of it, from whose bullets many a brave soul in the garrison perished." The palaces in front were finally stormed and held by the relieving force under General Havelock.

A plate from General Views & Special Points of Interest of the City of Lucknow, from Drawings made on the spot by Lieut. Col. D. S. Dodgson, A.A.C. London: Day & Son, Gate Street, Lincoln's Inns Fields. Lithographed title and 27 tinted lithographed views on 11 sheets, engraved plan at the end. Dedicated to Lieut. Gen. the Ho. Sir James Outram, Bart. G.C.B. Member of the supreme council of India, &c. &c.
