Summary edit

Description

In Tanzania, 70% of people make their money from smallholder farming. But only around 10% of people have a bank account – which makes it even more difficult for them to get loans to invest in their business.

But by teaming up with Equity for Tanzania (EFTA) and AgDevCo, the UK is helping small businesses to overcome that barrier. Eliphasi Kitomari (left) is one such businessman – he received a tractor from EFTA as a loan and can now plough his land without having to pay the high prices demanded by dealers further away, while paying the loan back from his increased profits. He even hires out his services too – helping to plough his neighbour's farms.

Mr Kitomari said: “It makes me very proud. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this tractor, all my success is down to the loan. Now local farmers can pay a fair price and use the plough when they need it. When I’ve paid my loan I’m thinking of starting a tour company!”

The initiative is part of a wider drive by the UK to promote business partnerships that can help build prosperity. Find out more at UK promotes business links in East Africa to end poverty
