Antigo depósito onde se conservava o gelo do inverno para o verão, evitando a fusão e garantindo o fornecimento a hospitais e hotéis, único sobrevivente dos vários que existiram nos inícios do século XX.

AREEIRO – O termo areeiro no vocabulário popular madeirense, significa lugar ou local onde existe um depósito de areão ou uma área de terreno areento, conforme define o Padre Fernando Augusto da Silva (Santa Maria Maior, 29 set. 1863; Funchal, 18 out. 1949), no seu opúsculo “Vocabulário Madeirense”, editado em 1950 pela Junta Geral do Funchal com prefácio do Cónego F. C. de Meneses Vaz (Santana a 1 fev. 1884; Funchal, 26 maio 1954). Assim, um areeiro na Madeira é um aglomerado ou depósito de piroclastos, provenientes de erupções vulcânicas explosivas. Estes materiais piroclásticos, por vezes, encontram-se alterados e argilificados pela acção dos agentes erosivos (chuva, granizo, neve, etc.) e são de granulometria variável. Os locais ou lugares de concentração destes piroclastos, são denominados pelos madeirenses com o topónimo de areeiro. São exemplos: o Chão do Areeiro, o Pico do Areeiro e o sítio do Areeiro, na freguesia de São Martinho no Funchal. (José Lemos Silva, Madeira, 'Gentes e Lugares, 2008 )
