| Description |
English: Ponies grazing south of Matley Bog, New Forest. Bog myrtle (myrica gale) grows on this wet heathland at the edge of Matley Bog. The resinous scent from the plant's leaves is traditionally used as a natural insect repellent - perhaps the ponies like to graze amongst it because it helps to keep the flies away. The bog myrtle has nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots which help them to survive in the nitrogen-poor soil, as do the alder trees in the carr along the bog. The usually moist ground has dried out following a dry and hot period. The Beaulieu-Lyndhurst road can just be seen on the left of the photo. |
