Também chamada caravela Santa Maria, embora seja uma nau. Fotografia de José Lemos Silva, 9 de Maio de 2010. Santa Cruz, ilha da Madeira. A nau Santa Maria, que antes se chamava La Gallega era propriedade do navegador e cartógrafo Juan de la Cosa (1460-1510), sendo uma embarcação do tipo carraca e integrou a frota de Cristóvão Colombo (1451-1506) que chegou à América em 1492, pilotada pelo seu anterior proprietário. Haveria de encalhar, na noite de 25 de dezembro de 1492, no areal de uma das praias do atual Haiti, na Baía do Caracol na então ilha Hispaniola, acabando por ser impossível a sua recuperação. Com o naufrágio da nau Santa Maria, a caravela Niña recebeu a bordo parte da tripulação e a carga daquela, inclusivamente, o almirante Cristóvão Colombo, conduzindo-os de volta à Península Ibérica e passando por Lisboa. |
