Vulgarmente, conhecida por Ponte da Carvalha, Ponte Velha ou Ponte da Várzea, esta infra-estrutura foi construída durante o domínio Filipino, no século XVII, com o objetivo de, eventualmente, substituir uma outra ponte de origem romana existente nas imediações. Não há consenso quanto ao custo da obra, havendo quem defenda que não se gastaram mais do que 19.000 réis na sua construção e quem sustente que o seu preço poderá ter ultrapassado os 40.000 réis.

A ponte sempre assumiu uma importância fundamental e estratégica, sendo uma das portas de entrada na vila. Aliás, durante as invasões francesas, foi um dos locais utilizados pelos sertaginenses para se defenderem da entrada das tropas inimigas.

Com cerca de 64 metros de comprimento, a ponte assenta sobre seis arcos redondos de alvenaria de pedra. O tabuleiro desenvolve-se em cavalete pouco pronunciado, quase horizontal de pedra.
