Description

Constituída por dois tabuleiros metálicos, que se destinavam a fazer a ligação rodoviária entre Vila Nova de Gaia e o Porto. Tem de comprimento cerca de 395 metros e de largura 8 metros, compostos por 5,5 metros de faixa de rodagem e 1,25 metros de passeios.

A obra foi adjudicada a 28 de Novembro de 1881, por concurso aberto e foi o engenheiro Teófilo Seyrig quem ficou encarregado pelo projecto.

A construção desta ponte permitia a passagem da estrada real vinda de Lisboa até às províncias do Norte e do Norte do País, tendo constituído umas das obras de maior envergadura no plano rodoviário realizado pelo monarca, Luiz I.

Ponte Pênsil

A ponte D.Luiz, construída ao lado do local onde existiu a antiga Ponte Pênsil tem os dois tabuleiros sustentados por um imponente arco de ferro e por cinco pilares.

O arco é formado por duas curvas parabólicas divergentes. O tabuleiro superior apoia-se nos encontros de cantaria e nos três pilares de cada margem do rio. Na sua totalidade foram gastos 3000 toneladas de ferro, sendo que deles 172 metros são de corda e 45 metros são de flecha, componentes do arco da ponte.

O tabuleiro superior foi inaugurado a 31 de Outubro de 1886, dia do aniversário natalício de el-rei D. Luiz, ao qual assistiram, para além das autoridades governamentais, as autoridades municipais administrativas e religiosas da cidade do Porto e de Vila Nova de Gaia. <a href="http://www.portoxxi.com/cultura/ver_edificio.php?id=64" rel="nofollow">www.portoxxi.com/cultura/ver_edificio.php?id=64</a>
