Il est ressenti jusqu'à St-Maixent, où un moine de l'abbaye le relate dans ses mémoires. Quelques jours auparavant, Louis XIV et Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche se sont mariés à St-Jean de Luz selon une clause du Traité des Pyrénées, conclu l'année précédente. Donnant entre autres à la couronne de France Artois et Roussillon par démembrement de la Catalogne, futurs Pas de Calais et Pyrénées-Orientales. Evénement funeste, signe du destin ? Le peuple d'alors, très superstitieux et sensible aux manifestations de colère de la nature, fait craindre aux autorités de graves troubles... Après bien des vicissitudes et nombreuses interruptions de chantier, les bâtiments tels qu'on les voit aujourd'hui, sont finalement achevés en 1736. En 1877 et pour 120 ans, le 114e R.I. prend ses quartiers dans l'enceinte, devenant dès lors caserne Canclaux. Lui aussi connait une vie particulièrement agitée, maintes fois dissous puis reconstitué... |
