Description

A Porta dos Nós, fecho do serviço do paço de D. Jaime, voltada para a actual avenida que leva o nome deste duque. Obra de sua iniciativa, portanto dos princípios do século XVI, de inspiração manuelina, é esta porta formada por duas colunas que parecem atadas às ombreiras por um encordoamento, suportando um remate invulgar, em cuja composição são visíveis nós também encordoados, de pedra. Simbolizariam estes três nós a posição da Casa Ducal em relação à Casa Real, segundo uma legenda que, conforme escreveu Frei Manuel Calado no século XVII na sua descrição de Vila Viçosa, ali existiria com a seguinte sentença “Depois de vós, nós”, entendendo-se esta última palavra nos dois significados que lhes correspondem de substantivo e de pronome. De saída a quem passa por detrás da Capela e das antigas cocheiras.
