Summary edit

Description

Heading up Rue de Lorraine in Beaune. We would head past the gateway, then head right around the old walls and ramparts. Starting from Boulevard Maréchal Joffre.

The Saint Nicolas Gate

The old fortified gate with drawbridge, known as the Porte du Bourgneuf, saw the arrival of many important figures: Henri II, accompanied by Catherine de Medicis in 1548, welcomed by the canons under a triumphal arch, freshly painted, with the sound of tambourines; Charles IX accompanied by the queen-mother made a short stay in 1594 and the door was again decorated for the entry of Louis XIII, en route to the Alps in 1629, then Queen Anne of Austria the following year. But the most pompous entry was that of Louis XIV. And the Queen, on November 10, 1669, when the cannon was fired.

Since 1770, the new door designed by Mayor Maufoux to bring the city up to date and designed by the Dijon architect Lenoir Le Romain welcomes visitors from the north.
