| Description |
English: Portland Castle, Isle of Portland, Dorset, 3 August 2019. Constructed by Henry VIII as an artillary fort in 1539-41 to defend against invasion by France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the English Civil War it was a Royalist stronghold and survived two sieges before surrendering in 1646. It survived as a fort until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. In WWI and WWII it was used as an orndance store and military offices. In 1949 it ceased military use and in 1955 was opened to the public. Pictured is the Great Hall. |
