In September 1782, Lord Mexborough married Elizabeth, only daughter of Henry Stephenson of East Burnham and Cox Lodge near Newcastle-on-Tyne. The present portraits may well have been commissioned in connection with this union. Lord Mexborough served as Member of Parliament for Lincoln between 1802 and 1812 and he died at his family seat, Methley Park, near Leeds aged sixty-eight. His wife died in her fifty-ninth year at Piccadilly and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
