The portrait depicts Vibullius Hipparchus Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes (101-178 A.D.), a prominent Athenian orator, sophist and philosopher, who was a benefactor mainly of Athens, but also of many other cities, adorning them with public buildings. As main representative of the Second Sophistic, Herodes had as role model in his public and personal life Hadrian (imitation Hadriani), who was one of his numerous pupils. Ca. 150 A.D.
