The sitter was the son of the Rev. William Evelyn, Dean of Emley in Ireland, and his wife Margaret Chamberlain. In 1787 he married Anne daughter of Anthony Shee of Castlebar and sister of Sir George Shee Bt, through whom he was related to the artist whose grandfather was George Shee of Castlebar. In 1817 John Evelyn inherited the estates of Wotton in Surrey and Deptford in Kent under the will of Mary Lady Evelyn, widow of Sir Frederick Evelyn Bt.
