English: Portrait of a Lady, said to be Mme de Reiset d'Arques, as Sappho. A young woman is depicted in the landscape. She wears an ocher-colored scarf over the peplos-like robe. With one hand she supports a plate with staves scratched into it, the other holds her pen. Little Cupid with the lyre at her side identifies her as Sappho.

Notes Attributed to Prudhon in the Sémur-Lamoignon family. Attributed to Marie-Guillemine Benoist by Alastair Lang. The attribution to Benoist, accepted by art historians, was rejected by Guy Stair Sainty when the painting reappeared at an auction in Vicenza in October 2021. Stair Sainty commented "direct inspection revealed that it was of mediocre quality and almost certainly not by the artist" ref.
