Description
Modersohn-Becker produced an innovative group of paintings of mother and children between around 1902 and 1907. In works such as this, she tries to expresse purity and strength of youth, which she believed could be a regenerative force for moderne society. Her simplified treatment of the young girl, set against a neutral, uncluttered background, helps to convey the qualities of uncorrepted youth that seh sought. The painting was produced a year before Paula Modersohn-Becker died, tragically, a few days after giving birth to her only child
