Yesterday I was browsing through some old high school yearbooks on-line and noticed something that took me aback. I noticed in the 1935 yearbook for Jefferson High School in San Antonio Texas. many of the girls were wearing a very neat, military-style uniform. Looking closely at the details I was kind if shocked to see the swastika on their jaunty little caps. These girls also had "Swastika" listed in their club affiliations. Had I discovered a Nazi fifth column in pre-war Texas? No, it turns out. Swastika Club was a popular organization in the early 20th Century that was connected to the YWCA that sought to prepare girls for success in the business world. They kept the name until about 1939 when the outbreak of war in Europe made the symbol increasingly unpopular.
