La leggenda narra che il fato decise che Atene sarebbe stata la città più potente di tutta la Grecia, fin dalla sua fondazione. Per questo Atena decise di prenderla sotto la sua guardia, ma anche Poseidone la desiderava, e nessuno dei due voleva cedere. Così Zeus, non riuscendo a metterli d'accordo, propose di lasciare decidere i cittadini.

Atena e Poseidone dovevano offrire un regalo, e quello che sarebbe giudicato il migliore darebbe la vittoria. Poseidone fece apparire un cavallo splendido, Atena fece sorgere di terra un ulivo. Il cavallo rappresenta la forza, il coraggio, la guerra, mentre l'ulivo la prudenza, la serenità, la pace. Il popolo scelse la pace, perchè, benchè la guerra potesse portare più ricchezze e potere, tutto ciò che la pace portava era più sicuro e duraturo.

Tutti approvarono e scelsero il regalo di Atena, che diede finalmente il suo nome alla città.
