Description / Descriptions : Obtaining a commission in the British Army under General Braddock, John Montresor (1736-1799) was present at Louisbourg in 1758, the siege of Quebec in 1759 and served during the capitulation of Montreal in 1760. Before his appointment as Chief Civil Engineer in America in 1775, he spent fifteen years involved in surveying, mapping and planning fortifications in North America and built Fort Erie. He served in the American Revolutionary War and returned to England in 1778, retiring from the army. After disputes with the British Treasury over his accounts, his assets were seized by the government. He was incarcerated in Maidstone Prison, for debts still outstanding and died there. /

Chargé d’une commission dans l'armée britannique sous les ordres du général Braddock, John Montresor (1736-1799) était présent à Louisbourg en 1758 et au siège de Québec en 1759, et il servit durant la capitulation de Montréal en 1760. Avant sa nomination comme ingénieur civil en chef pour l'Amérique en 1775, il passa quinze ans à arpenter, à cartographier et à planifier des fortifications en Amérique du Nord, et bâtit le Fort Erie. Il servit durant la guerre révolutionnaire américaine et retourna en Angleterre en 1778, prenant sa retraite de l'armée. Après des disputes avec le Trésor britannique au sujet de ses comptes, ses biens furent saisis par le gouvernement. Il fut incarcéré à la prison de Maidstone pour dettes impayées et y mourut.
