English: Post Office, Westgate, over 50 years ago This was a red-letter day for the town. A new Post Office building was being officially opened.
The photographer was touring and simply stopped there to buy a stamp and post a letter. It looks as though the ceremony was going on behind the large windows. On the other corner of Chaloner Street there are signs that Thirkell's shop has had a new front. http://www.francisfrith.com/guisborough/photos/westgate-c1955_G66024/ For comparison, moderator, Mick Garratt has kindly photographed the same scene 52 years later, on 22 April, 2009. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1278502. Quite a transformation, the original post war architecture just had to go ! |
