Title
Post routes map of southern Indiana
Description
A hand-drawn, vellum map of southernmost part of Indiana showing different roads through several counties and cities during the 1840s or so. The map includes the southern and eastern boundaries of the state, as well as the Ohio, Wabash, and White rivers, and the bounds of Posey, Vanderburgh, Gibson, Pike, Warrick, Dubois, Spencer, Perry, Orange, Crawford, and Harrison counties. The types of roads on the map are "four horse coach routes", "two horse" and "horse", indicating the kinds of transportation post riders and drivers could use to transport the mail. The map is believed to have belonged to Elisha Embree, a judge of the Dubois County Circuit Court (1835-1845), who was later elected as a U.S. Congressman and served as a member of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads during 1847-1849.
