Title
English: Postal delivery wagon, 1905
Description
English:

In 1896, the post office started delivering mail to the rural areas of Bainbridge Island and hired John Richard Rayne as its first rural mail carrier. According to family tradition, this was Rayne's first job after he moved from Michigan to Washington State. He got the job after scoring 98 out of 100 possible points on the required test. This 1905 photo shows Rural Free Delivery cart #1 at Crystal Springs, a small settlement in the southwestern part of Bainbridge Island. John Rayne is inside the horse-drawn cart. The woman standing nearby is Julia Severson.
