Caption and date top right: Vladislaus Jagello, rex Poloniae invictissimus, fundator Carmelitarum ad Corpus Christi, cui dicti patres tamquam benefactori suo munificentissimo hanc effigiem gratitudinis ergo posuerunt anno Dni 1665 |
Notes | One of a pair of portraits of King Ladislaus II Jagiello (Jogaila of Lithuania) and his wife Jadwiga of Poland. Both portraits are very close in forms, features and garments to the portraits of Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632) and his second wife Constance of Austria (1588-1631), the latter dressed according to mannerist Spanish fashion, from about 1630. It is highly probable that effigies of these monarch were used, possibly by mistake, as model for the Poznań portraits. Identification of the original model by Marcin Latka (Artinpl), 06.01.2022. |
