two baby prairie dogs look out over the prairie

Prairie dog pups are born underground and do not emerge until they are at least six weeks old. They are closely watched by their family members as they are a favorite prey of many animals like birds and coyotes. Pups will play with their siblings above ground and follow adults as they learn to search for food. Once they are one year old, most males will disperse up to one mile away to start their own families.
