« Première institution des sourds-muets au Canada
aux 39 et 41, rue D'Auteuil
Le 15 juin 1831 est fondé l'Institution des sourds-muets de Québec, une école publique, bilingue et gratuite, vouée à l'intégration sociale et professionnelle des sourds-muets. Ronald Macdonald (1797-1854) en assume la direction et agit comme précepteur. Deux ans plus tard, Antoine Caron (1813-1847), sourd-muet, seconde M. Macdonald à titre de répétiteur. En 1836, par manque de fonds, l'Institution doit fermer ses portes. Elle compte alors une vingtaine d'élèves âgés de 6 à 25 ans.
