| Description |
English: Built in 1853, this Federal-style house was built by Clark Waring using slave labor to serve as the home of two university professors, replacing an earlier house on the same site that had been constructed in 1810. The house was extensively renovated and altered to its present form in the early 20th Century, when it became home to the President of the University of South Carolina. The building features a stucco-clad exterior with a symmetrical eight-bay wide front facade, six-over-six double-hung windows, two lower wings flanking a central taller wing with a hipped roof, decorative trim surrounds at the windows, porticoes at the front doors with doric columns, doric pilasters, and a metal railing on he roof, and two one-story wings to the rear. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. |
