Português: Presidente da República general Óscar de Fragoso Carmona no garden party da Quinta Vigia. (1869-1951) António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona (Lisboa, 1869; idem, 18 abr. 1951). Filho do general Inácio Maria Machado de Morais Carmona e de Maria Inês de Fragoso Corte-Real, frequentou o Colégio Militar (1882-1888) e a Escola do Exército (1889-1892). Homem de secretaria, mas de muito boa educação, cauteloso e inteligente, soube adaptar-se às complexas situações políticas do seu tempo, sendo a figura representativa, cautelar e tutelar do Estado Novo de Salazar. A sua capacidade de adaptação levou-o a ter conseguido manter a presidência da República por mais de um quarto de século, o mais longo período da História Portuguesa. A passagem de um dia pela Madeira encontra-se pomposamente relatada por Elmano Vieira (1892-1962), O presidente Carmona na Madeira: dez horas maravilhosas da História Insular, 13 de Julho de 1938, capa de Max Römer (1878-1960), Governo do Distrito Autónomo do Funchal, 1942. Um exemplar que pertenceu à Biblioteca particular de Júlio Dantas (1876- 1962) e à coleção Rui Carita, Funchal, encontra-se hoje no Arquivo Regional da Madeira. |
