Caroline Christine of Saxe-Eisenach (1699-1743)? |

Description |
English: Portrait of Caroline Christine of Saxe-Eisenach (1699-1743), wife of Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal (1682-1770)
"This forms a pair with matching frames to RCIN 404689, a painting clearly depicting a prince or nobleman wearing the Orders of the Elephant and Dannebrog. That one possibly depicts Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal (1682-1770) which means this pendant portrait should depict his wife, Caroline Christine of Saxe-Eisenach. The couple married in 1725 and Charles was awarded the Order of the Elephant in 1731. Alternatively this couple could be Frdererick IV of Denmark (1671-1730) and his Queen, Anne Sophie Reventlow 1673-1743. Three-quarter-length, seated in a chair, facing the spectator, her head turned slightly to the left, wearing a low-cut brown satin dress with a pendant brooch at her breast and a crimson ermine-lined mantle over her shoulders. A crown, resting on a cushion, and apparently protected by a sort of ermine case, is visible to the right." |
