Description
English: Schematics of a Residual Differential Device. Current flowing through the neutral return line (N, blue) is I1 and is compared to the current I2 flowing through the energized line (Ph, red). The load is at PE.
  • Left: Under normal operation, the current in the neutral return line I1 is balanced by an equal current in the energized line I2, and there is no current induced in the coil K1.
  • Center: When the two currents I1 and I2 become imbalanced due to the presence of some leakage current through a fault that provides an easier path to ground, a current is induced in coil K1, causing the relay K2 to trip.
  • Right: After relay K2 has tripped and opened the circuit breakers, power has been cut to the load PE and the presumed fault to ground that caused K2 to trip. Power to the load cannot be restored until the fault has been resolved.
