editDescriptionPrinter's device of Reynold Wolf, by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg |
English: Charitas device of the printer Reynold Wolf. Woodcut, 6.8 × 4 cm, British Library, London.
The design shows small boys knocking apples from a tree with sticks, representing the theme of Charity (ἀγάπη). The Charity device was used by radical Protestant circles in the Netherlands at this time. Reynold Wolf printed Protestant texts and acted as an agent for Thomas Cromwell and Thomas Cranmer in passing Protestant literature between England and Germany (Foister, p. 137). |
