Notes | Detail from the 'Little Executioner', mezzotint by Prince Rupert. Contemporary accounts of the mezzotint process describe it with varying degrees of clarity. The first mention in English was made by John Evelyn in his Sculptura, or the history and art of Chalcography and engraving in copper published in 1662 under the heading 'Of the new way of Engraving, or Mezzo Tinto, Invented, and communicated by his Highnesse Prince RUPERT, Count Palatine of Rhyne, &c.'. Unfortunately the precise details of the process are left 'ænigmatical' but the small volume nevertheless did contain a specimen of the art by Prince Rupert no doubt intended to intrigue the reader".
